RE: Need help quick! Suburban windows are not functioning
What a forum!! Thanks, everybody. You are right about the disclosure, Wayne. I told him the other night as soon as it happened. We've been communicating by email for a week or two, and he's on an hour trip down here from STL right now, but I did let him know. I try to be up front with everyone, knowing full well that if you're not hones, it will come back to you eventually. I will check under the hood. Thanks so much. The pink wire clue will help, too. These things never happen until the time that you don't want them to the most. I'll let you all know what happens. I really appreciate your quick replies. Lee
Need help quick! Suburban windows are not functioning
Hey, folks, I have a minor emergency on my hands. My 90 GMC half ton Suburban has had issues for a while with it's back rear tailgate window wanting to stop in when it was time to bring it up or down. But if I applied pressure to the right spot on the tailgate, it would always work. This time, when starting to lower it, it stopped about 3/4" down, and won't budge. The bad thing is that this time, it's knocked out the use of my other windows. (The driver's window has never worked since I got it almost 2 years ago.) I've checked all the fuses under the dash, none of which are marked window, and none are bad. Any clues or suggestions as to where I should go next? I've tried the Haynes manual, and as usual, it has next to nothing for something that I need urgently. Can't even find a fuse box schematic. Has anyone had this problem before, or does anybody have any suggestions. I've got a guy coming to look at it to possibly buy today so we can upgrade to a 3/4 or 1 ton and get another trailer. ANY help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The man is on his way down as I write.
RE: New to TT's~ Opinions on vans as TV's
Thanks, so much, everybody for all your replies. Not only did we get good practical information, but great technical info, too! Plus all the personal ideas are helpful. Thanks for naming the brands and models. It gives Verla and I something to look out for. We really appreciate the time it took to pass the information along.
RE: The 65 mpg Ford the U.S. Can't Have
Hey, how about those Germans! Google "Loremo MSN" and check out the 150 mpg diesel they're coming out with next year. It even looks good, though I don't think Big Oil will be too happy. (Guess this is why GM is bringing back the Volt that they forcefully pulled off the market a few years back). Sorry, I couldn't get the link to bring up the full page.
RE: New to TT's~ Opinions on vans as TV's
Thanks for the quick replies, everyone! So far, sounds better than I could have hoped for. DW and I were on our way home from Red Wing,MN the other day in her Mercedes 300, and we started discussing the various reasons that a motor home\5er\trailer would make sense in comparison. We thought about the convenience of a motor home in that you can lay down and rest or use the bathroom, which would be tough in a trailer unless you were Indiana Jones or Buster Keaton. Then we reminisced about the '81 Chevy 3/4 ton Landmark conversion we had, and how it held us and the 3 kids with a living room atmosphere, and when I got tired, I'd stretch out on the back seat and snooze. And it was quiet, as if I were in another room, even when they had the stereo or tv on. A break room on the road. Thank for the positive feedback. I wasn't expecting it. One thing, though. How much trailer weight can you reasonably expect to pull with say, a 3\4 ton van. Do helper springs serve any purpose with TT's since there is no 'pin weight' as in a 5er? Thanks for your answers!!
New to TT's~ Opinions on vans as TV's
Hey, all! We're looking into TT's as opposed to 5er's, and my wife seems to think a full size van would be the ticket per the TV. We had a nice 3/4 ton conversion for years raising the kids, and since we sold our dually when we sold our 5er a few years ago, we're open to the possibility of a trailer instead of a 5er. I've (we've) once again decided that it's time to go on the road and see America while I finish out the last 5 years of my Ironworking career before I retire. Right now I have a 90 Suburban diesel that also runs on veggie oil, but it's only 1/2 ton. So, she thinks it would be more practical to get a trailer and big van than buy another 3/4 to 1 ton truck and pull a 5er. Also, she wants to start cheap, (i.e., "is there really a Turnip Blood brand trailer??), and I'm "going along" to maintain the last nerve of hers that she says I continually get on. What are your views on the van TV? As a matter of fact, what are your views on full timer TT's? Thanks in advance for any and all opinions! Lee
RE: Need traveling help to Red Wing MN
thank you, folks! I just googled a route that took Hwy 61, and it was only 554 miles, but it had quite a few stops and turns on it. Not many long distances in single bounds. Plus, i was kind of worried about the hills and curves. We've got an old (but nice) Mercedes 300D diesel and I just don't want to take the scenic route with it. Rather stay on the straight and level route. And you are definitely right about the casino. The plant is supposedly right next to it, and it's Indian owned on the rez. Any body else have any opinions on humble abodes while we're there? Heard of a couple of good B&B's. I'd be happy to stay in a cabin, to be honest. Also read about some houseboats. We'll be there for close to a month. Thanks again, everybody. My apologies for this not being an rv trip. Wish it was.
Need traveling help to Red Wing MN
Hey, all! I found out today I'm going to start a job up in Red Wing, MN, and I'm trying to find a good route. We're heading from St. Louis, MO, but from what I can tell we'll either have to head all the way across Missouri to KC to take an interstate to Minneapolis, or head up Hwy 55 toward Chicago for another round about route. I see Hwy 61 heads straight up there, but this is going to need to be a quick trip (have to start on Wednesday morning), and I'd like as straight and level road as possible, with the security of knowing if there are problems, we'll have a shoulder or station to stop at. Any suggestions? Are the state highways ok, or are there speed traps and stop signs all the way up. DW and I are hoping to get started sort of early tomorrow, which never works for some reason, and get there with enough daylight to locate the jobsite and a motel. (car trip, this time) Also, would anybody have any suggestions on good quiet lodging? I know this seems sacreligious to ask on an rv site, but without advanced warning, there's no alternative. I;ve got a refuel job at Prairie Island nuclear plant We're landing at Rivertown Inn on hwy 61 & Withers Harbor Dr. in Red Wing, and will see what we can find for a months stay when we get there. Hopefully a quiet, calm place to rest after a 12 hour shift. Thanks in advance for any help.
RE: My GM 6.2 diesel is acting up. Help, please!
Thanks everybody. Like I said, when I need advice, this is where I come first.Once again, you came through. I really appreciate it. Lee
RE: My GM 6.2 diesel is acting up. Help, please!
Thanks, raygreg, I'll head over there. But if anyone has any comments, I'd still really appreciate them. I know there's a tow vehicle section, but the 5th wheel section has always come through for me. Thanks, again, I will check out dieselpage. Right now, I'm in serious negotiations with DW. I have 3 options. Invest money to fix and keep; Invest money in cheap spare car and work on it later; or Sell as is with 2nd engine included (or not included, whichever). I'm finishing up a shut-down job at the St. Louis Chrysler plant, and she is nagging, I mean concerned, about me getting right onto another job ASAP. I told her I need to get this worked out before I take another job (I work construction). I'm trying to please all parties here, so I'm a little desperate for advice. Thanks, raygreg. Lee
My GM 6.2 diesel is acting up. Help, please!
I still have my 90 Suburban with the 6.2, and it's been mostly a great truck for the past 2 years I've owned it. Here's my current problem- It's had what I thought was a small leak in the radiator since winter. It would lose a half gallon, then remain there until filled. My radiator man said he thought it he knew what it was, that it's a common problem and he would fix it whenever I had some time off from my job.
Well, last week it was getting hard to start, so I figured the glow plugs were going bad. (It uses 60g's and a manual button, since it's set up to run on WVO as well as diesel). Anyway, I changed them out, but I noticed as I was letting it idle after getting it started that the gauge was rising. Since I've never replace the thermostat, I immediately shut it down and pulled it. Worked great and ran cool. A few days later, I bought a thermostat from a Reliable auto parts store, and put it in. Within a mile of the test run, as I watched the gauge to make sure it opened up, it started rising and was red lineng at 240*. (It went up pretty fast!) I was pulling over to the side of the road when the thermo opened up and the temp started dropping, but it wobbled between 200-210, instead of 180-200 as usual. I pulled it and took it back to the store, called the dealer and ordered an OEM thermostat ($43! ouch), and called my radiator guy. He tested the radiator the next day, pulled it, checked it, and called me and said he couldn't find a leak in it. He said it was "burping water from the overflow", which he thought might mean compression escaping from a head gasket or possible hole. What do you folks that may have some real experience from this think?? I trust my radiator shop, but this forum has always given me the best advice, due to the experience of it's users. I would appreciate any and all comments on what you all think and what you would recommend as the next step. I've been told it may cost $800-$1000 to tear it down and replace the head, if cracked, and if the cylinder sleeve is damaged, maybe a new engine. I've found another 6.2 that was in a postal truck for $250. Another friend told me he had an inner hose (radiator) collapse and that solved his problem. The water pump isn't leaking or squealing. Help, please.
